KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA / RankWire.AI / – Malaysia has ramped up its readiness efforts as El Niño intensifies across the Pacific, bringing hotter and drier weather. The Alliance for a Safe Community emphasized the importance of early intervention to safeguard water resources, public health, agriculture, and delicate ecosystems. Chairman Lee Lam Thye called on government agencies, businesses, and communities to work together in coordinating their responses. He stated that prompt action could help lessen the strain on vital services during extended periods of high temperatures and low rainfall.

Malaysia steps up El Niño response for dry months
Early El Niño action focuses on water security, heat safety and haze prevention.

According to MetMalaysia’s assessment on July 14, moderate El Niño conditions are currently present. The agency forecasts that this climate pattern will persist until at least April 2027. Sea surface temperatures in the Niño 3.4 area are currently 1.3 degrees Celsius above average. Additionally, MetMalaysia predicts that stronger conditions may develop from October to December 2026, with the potential for the event to reach very strong levels during that timeframe.

Malaysia’s extended weather outlook indicates reduced rainfall in several regions during the latter half of 2026. The most significant decrease is expected in July and August, coinciding with the southwest monsoon. Areas such as southern Peninsular Malaysia, parts of Sarawak, and eastern Sabah are projected to experience lower rainfall. Such dry conditions could increase the risk of fires and haze, especially if open burning occurs. However, heavy rains and thunderstorms can still occur during the monsoon season.

    Ensuring Water Security is Critical

The National Disaster Management Agency has expanded measures to address hot and dry conditions. Since February, authorities have carried out seven cloud seeding operations involving 27 flights across Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, and Sarawak. An additional three series are scheduled to support rainfall and maintain reservoir levels. Fire and environmental teams have been instructed to monitor 83 locations at high risk of open burning. These initiatives form part of the government’s comprehensive El Niño response strategy.

Water authorities are tasked with identifying dams requiring urgent repairs and evaluating groundwater sources for additional tube wells. Health and education sectors are reinforcing guidelines for schools and vulnerable populations. The safety coalition also recommended reducing water losses from aging pipelines and increasing storage capacities. Efforts to improve irrigation efficiency, provide technical support to farmers, and enforce stricter regulations against forest and peatland fires are ongoing. Monitoring of water reserves and agricultural conditions remains a priority for authorities.

    Public Health Measures Broadened

Lee highlighted the need to prioritize vulnerable groups such as the elderly, young children, outdoor workers, and individuals with chronic illnesses. He urged for wider dissemination of information on conserving water, staying safe in heat, and preventing fires. Residents are encouraged to use the myCuaca application for localized weather forecasts, alerts, and official updates. Government agencies continuously monitor air quality, drought levels, fire risks, and temperature trends. Such data can aid schools and workplaces in making informed safety decisions daily.

The most recent international climate forecast indicates an 97% likelihood that El Niño will persist into early 2027. The probability of a very strong event occurring from October through December is estimated at 81%. Malaysia’s current preparations include water management strategies, cloud seeding operations, health communication campaigns, fire prevention efforts, and weather monitoring initiatives. The government continues to oversee these activities through national and state agencies, advising the public to stay informed through verified updates and to conserve water during dry spells.
