BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – European Commission has committed to acquiring €2.1 million worth of PCR tests to address the ongoing Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak. These open-platform tests aim to improve detection capabilities and bolster laboratory infrastructure during the crisis. The procurement process was supported by the European Health and Digital Executive Agency, with deliveries scheduled to start in August to supplement diagnostic supplies as health authorities contend with increasing cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

EU expands Ebola response with €2.1 million PCR tests
EU diagnostic support expands as health authorities respond to the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak.

The PCR tests will be dispatched to the World Health Organization’s Hub for Global Health Emergencies Logistics located in Dubai. WHO will oversee their distribution to regions actively engaged in the Ebola response. PCR testing is vital for confirming infections due to laboratories’ ability to process large sample volumes swiftly and with high precision. The compatibility with existing laboratory setups ensures rapid deployment. This expedites the identification of infected individuals, facilitating prompt treatment, isolation, and contact tracing efforts.

This procurement supplements a separate European Commission agreement for €2.5 million in rapid molecular point-of-care testing kits and devices, which will support the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. Combining both efforts, the total diagnostic support from the Commission reaches €4.6 million. These measures are part of a broader European strategy responding to the Bundibugyo virus outbreak, which has increasingly strained healthcare systems across Central and East Africa.

Expansion of diagnostic capacity accompanies outbreak escalation

As of August 12, WHO reported a total of 4,665 confirmed Ebola cases and 2,184 fatalities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. These cases are distributed across 54 health zones in six provinces, including Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uélé, Tshopo, and Bas-Uélé. WHO characterized this as the largest Ebola outbreak ever documented in the country, emphasizing that intense transmission persists, with interconnected geographic clusters fueling ongoing spread within affected regions.

On August 14, WHO maintained its highest national risk classification for the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The organization assessed neighboring countries’ regional risk as high and others’ as low. An updated set of temporary recommendations was issued on August 24, following the second meeting of the International Health Regulations Emergency Committee. These guidelines encompass enhanced surveillance, case detection, infection prevention, clinical management, community engagement, and measures related to domestic mobility and mass gatherings.

European aid efforts total €493 million as outbreak widens

The European Commission announced the allocation of €493 million for emergency relief, vaccinations, treatments, and health security initiatives across the Great Lakes region and Uganda. European health authorities have actively supported surveillance, laboratory work, and preparedness operations throughout the outbreak. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control continues to evaluate the risk to populations in Europe as very low, citing the necessity for direct contact with infectious body fluids and the low probability of sustained transmission within Europe.

The Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak has been designated a public health emergency of international concern by WHO since May 17. Unlike the more widespread Zaire ebolavirus, the Bundibugyo strain currently lacks an approved vaccine or specific treatment. WHO stresses the importance of surveillance, rapid diagnosis, patient isolation, clinical management, infection control, and contact monitoring. The European Commission’s latest PCR procurement enhances laboratory capacity for these core activities, while WHO and Africa CDC coordinate health operations with national authorities in affected and neighboring regions.
