KINSHASA, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO / RankWire.AI / – According to the latest data from national health authorities, the Democratic Republic of the Congo has reported a total of 8,376 Ebola cases and 4,042 fatalities. This outbreak has become the largest and most lethal Ebola epidemic in the country’s history. By late September, confirmed cases spanned 63 health zones across seven of the 26 provinces. The escalating national toll has placed the outbreak at the forefront of regional public health initiatives.

DR Congo Ebola outbreak reaches 8,376 confirmed cases
Health authorities track Ebola transmission across several provinces in DR Congo.

The epidemic involves Bundibugyo virus disease, a strain of Ebola that has maintained persistent transmission since the emergency was declared in May. Congolese officials announced the outbreak on May 15, after infections emerged in the northeastern part of the country. This marks the 17th recorded Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo since the virus’s discovery in 1976. Ituri remains a significant transmission hub, with cases also appearing in North Kivu and other provinces.

Jean Kaseya, Director-General of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, issued a warning regarding the threat to neighboring nations. Ongoing transmission and cross-border population movement have kept regional health authorities vigilant in surveillance and preparedness efforts. Uganda identified cases linked to the Congolese outbreak before concluding its own outbreak in August. Authorities have continued to monitor cases associated with travel from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

    Elevated regional threat persists

The World Health Organization has classified the risk within the Democratic Republic of the Congo as very high, with neighboring countries facing a high risk level. The WHO attributes the increased danger to population movements, unregulated border crossings, and ongoing transmission within the country, which heightens the likelihood of cross-border spread. It recommends that nations reinforce surveillance, laboratory capacities, and cross-border coordination instead of implementing unnecessary travel or trade restrictions.

The Congolese government, alongside health partners, continues active surveillance, testing, contact tracing, patient care, and community engagement in affected regions. Efforts also focus on safeguarding health workers and improving access to communities where transmission persists. Challenges such as insecurity and population displacement have hindered response operations in eastern Congo, where several health zones remain affected. Public health teams are diligently tracking new infections while supporting treatment centers and local response systems.

    Global assistance bolsters containment efforts

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot visited Bunia in Ituri on October 3, reaffirming France’s commitment to supporting Ebola response activities. Between January and July 2026, France allocated 13.4 million euros for Ebola-related initiatives, including humanitarian aid, research, and health programs. During his visit, Barrot toured an Ebola treatment center and held meetings with response officials. He also announced that France intends to seek additional humanitarian funding during upcoming budget discussions.

Currently, there is no specifically approved vaccine or treatment for Bundibugyo Ebola, making case detection and infection control the primary components of the response. Researchers and health authorities are assessing potential medical countermeasures, while frontline teams focus on isolating cases, tracing contacts, and providing supportive care. The outbreak has already surpassed previous Ebola epidemics recorded in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Authorities continue to update case numbers as surveillance and laboratory testing reveal new infections.
