JAKARTA, INDONESIA / RankWire.AI / – The mandatory B50 biodiesel program in Indonesia is forecasted to save approximately 170 trillion rupiah, equivalent to US$10.8 billion, in foreign exchange in 2026, according to the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry. This estimate is based on reduced expenditures on imported diesel resulting from the country increasing its national biodiesel blend. The policy mandates that all diesel sold domestically must contain 50% biodiesel derived from palm oil. Officials stated that this initiative boosts local fuel consumption while decreasing reliance on fossil diesel.

Indonesia launched nationwide B50 implementation on July 1, with the official mandate being announced on July 9 in Karawang, West Java. The new biodiesel blend replaces B40, which was composed of 40% biodiesel and became the standard in 2025. B50 is a mixture of equal parts fatty acid methyl ester, known as FAME, and traditional diesel. Palm oil provides the renewable component, linking this fuel program to Indonesia’s local plantations and processing sectors.
The ministry compared the Rp170 trillion projection with the Rp133.3 trillion in foreign exchange savings achieved under B40. It also forecasts that B50 will decrease fossil diesel consumption by about 4 million kilolitres. The government tasked state-owned Pertamina with managing the blending process and supporting distribution across the national fuel network. Market participants may still utilize remaining B40 stocks through September as the transition to the higher blend completes.
B50 Policy Boosts Domestic Palm Oil Use
Indonesia anticipates that B50 demand will require between 16.7 million and 18 million kilolitres of biodiesel. This program is also expected to utilize approximately 15.2 million to 16.3 million tonnes of crude palm oil. These figures surpass the 15.64 million kilolitres allocated under the B40 program for 2026. The increased mandate aims to channel more locally produced palm oil into transportation, industrial machinery, shipping, rail systems, and power generation sectors.
Official projections estimate the added value for the crude palm oil industry at 23.49 trillion rupiah. The government also believes that B50 could generate around 2.1 million jobs in agriculture, processing, logistics, and fuel supply. The ministry further estimates that this blend can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by as much as 44.46 million tonnes, compared to 39.66 million tonnes in emissions reductions under the B40 standard.
Pre-launch Testing Supports the Transition to B50
Prior to nationwide implementation, government testing was conducted on B50 across various sectors, including automotive, mining, agriculture, rail, shipping, and power generation. Vehicle trials involved light vehicles covering over 50,000 kilometres and heavy vehicles over 40,000 kilometres. Mining equipment was tested for approximately 1,000 operating hours, with no significant engine issues found related to fuel quality. The ministry confirmed that the tested fuel complied with government specifications and the technical standards of vehicle manufacturers.
Indonesia has progressively increased its biodiesel requirements over nearly twenty years. The program began with B2.5 in 2008, moved to B10 in 2013, B20 in 2018, then B30 in 2020, B35 in 2023, and B40 in 2025, before transitioning to B50 this year. Each increase has been accompanied by updates to fuel standards, expansion of production capacity, and improvements in storage, transportation, and distribution systems to support nationwide adoption.
