NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – On Monday, U.S. equities experienced a significant boost as technology stocks led the surge and crude oil prices fell sharply. The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged 693.38 points, or 1.32%, closing at an all-time high of 53,178.41. The S&P 500 increased by 1.48% to 7,600.50, just shy of its record peak. Meanwhile, the Nasdaq Composite advanced 2.13% to 25,913.90, outpacing other indexes. The market’s broad gains across large and small companies marked the start of August positively.

Wall Street stocks rally as Dow hits record and crude slides
U.S. stocks climbed as Big Tech gains and falling oil prices lifted market sentiment.

Technology and communication services stocks fueled much of the overall rise. Meta Platforms and Alphabet contributed to a 4.3% increase in the S&P 500 communication services sector, the strongest among the 11 sectors. Amazon gained 4.6%, reaching a market value surpassing $3 trillion for the first time after quarterly earnings were released. An exchange traded fund tracking seven leading tech companies rose nearly 4%, reflecting high demand for major growth stocks.

The decline in crude oil prices also played a role in supporting the market. Brent crude settled 4.7% lower at $83.77 per barrel after President Donald Trump announced the U.S. would delay new strikes against Iran. Trump also indicated that negotiations would address reopening the Strait of Hormuz, though Iran disputed that any talks had been scheduled. The drop in oil prices alleviated immediate inflation pressures and caused Treasury yields to decline during the session. Energy stocks dropped 1.2%, making the sector the weakest on the day.

Falling oil prices help ease market inflation concerns

The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield fell to approximately 4.68%, down from late Friday levels. This decline in yields eased borrowing costs for growth-oriented companies, which tend to be highly sensitive to interest rate changes. The Federal Reserve remained in focus after recent inflation worries and rising energy prices. New York Federal Reserve President John Williams noted that inflationary pressures should gradually diminish. As bond prices rose and yields declined, investors kept an eye out for further labor market data.

The upward momentum extended well beyond the tech giants. The Russell 2000 index, representing smaller companies, increased 1.7% to 2,981.91. Advancing stocks outnumbered decliners by 2.62 to 1 on the New York Stock Exchange and 3.01 to 1 on the Nasdaq. Trading volume reached 19.36 billion shares, exceeding the 20-day average of 17.66 billion. The S&P 500 marked 15 new 52-week highs and one new low, reflecting broad market participation.

Strong earnings reports bolster the market rally

Corporate earnings provided additional support for the gains. Of the 304 S&P 500 companies that reported through Friday, quarterly earnings grew by 29.3%. Market data from LSEG showed that approximately 85.2% of these companies surpassed analyst expectations. SpaceX rose 5.6% ahead of its first quarterly report as a public entity. Conversely, Marriott International declined 7% after issuing a third-quarter profit outlook below forecasts.

The record closing for the Dow capped a widespread positive start to August following a challenging July for certain market sectors. Tech stocks had experienced pressure from concerns related to artificial intelligence investments, interest rates, and geopolitical tensions with Iran. Monday’s rally pushed the S&P 500 within 0.1% of its all-time high and extended Nasdaq’s gains. For 2026, the Dow is up 10.6%, the S&P 500 has increased 11%, and the Nasdaq has risen 11.5%.
