GENEVA, SWITZERLAND / RankWire.AI / – World Trade Organization is set to host its inaugural Trade and Technology Day on September 14 at its headquarters in Geneva. The event aims to gather trade officials, technology policymakers, business leaders, and other stakeholders. Its core theme, “AI and Trade: Turning Potential into Progress,” will steer conversations around artificial intelligence and international commerce. The discussions will prioritize policies that broaden access to AI tools and foster more equitable global trade development.

WTO trade and tech day puts inclusive AI policy in focus
World Trade and Tech Day will put inclusive AI policy at the center of global trade talks.

The event will commence with opening remarks from Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. A ministerial dialogue will explore why artificial intelligence has emerged as a pivotal issue in trade policy. The program will feature a keynote speech along with a panel discussion involving private-sector representatives. Topics will include digital services, intellectual property, technical standards, and the role of developing economies within AI-driven value chains. These sessions will aim to connect technological policy frameworks with the practical needs of cross-border trade.

A key reference for the discussions will be the World Trade Report 2025, which highlights that artificial intelligence could boost global trade by up to 37% by 2040. It also projects a potential increase in global gross domestic product by as much as 13%. However, the report emphasizes that these benefits hinge on factors like infrastructure, skills, technological adoption, and supportive policies. Additionally, it warns that unequal access to AI may hinder participation from lower-income economies.

    Trade policy takes center stage

Multiple sessions will focus on how AI can reduce the costs associated with international trade. Participants will explore tools that assist companies with document processing, compliance management, and supply chain analysis. The agenda will also address digital services and intellectual property rights, along with the importance of technical standards for ensuring market compatibility. These discussions highlight the increasing deployment of AI in customs, logistics, finance, and other trade-related sectors.

The event will also shed light on existing barriers to wider AI adoption. Many firms still face challenges such as unreliable internet, limited computing resources, a shortage of skilled personnel, and high costs of financing. Smaller enterprises often encounter additional legal and technical hurdles when entering digital markets. During a June discussion on AI and trade, WTO’s small-business group examined these issues, emphasizing how new tools can improve market research, cut costs, and facilitate access to trade information.

Showcasing real-world AI applications for trade

An exhibition on artificial intelligence applications for international trade will be a feature of Trade and Tech Day. A pitching session will showcase tools developed for companies, government agencies, and trade organizations. These demonstrations will bridge policy discussions with tangible technological applications, illustrating how AI supports functions like supply-chain analysis, regulatory processes, and market data access. The event aims to provide attendees with practical insights into AI systems already integrated into trade operations.

Taking place at the WTO’s headquarters in Geneva on September 14, the event will combine ministerial discussions, business insights, policy analysis, and technology showcases. The agenda will focus on artificial intelligence’s influence on trade costs, digital services, and economic participation. It will also consider the infrastructure and skills necessary for broader AI integration. Details regarding registration and virtual participation are available on the official event webpage.
