The Central Bank of Egypt announced this provisional figure on September 7, marking the highest level recorded. At the close of July, reserves stood at $56.2939 billion, indicating an increase of approximately $920.6 million during August, or about 1.6%. This marks a continued upward trend in Egypt’s monthly reserves in 2026, pushing the official foreign reserves above $57 billion for the first time ever.

Compared to August 2025, the reserve total increased by $7.9638 billion from $49.2507 billion, representing an annual growth rate of roughly 16.2%. At the end of December 2025, Egypt’s net international reserves were $51.4516 billion. Since then, reserves have grown by around $5.76 billion, or 11.2%, over the first eight months of 2026. Official data confirms that the reserve total has grown every month since the beginning of the year, with positive increases recorded through August.
The pace of accumulation accelerated during mid-2026, with reserves reaching $53.1342 billion in May before increasing to $55.0723 billion in June. The upward momentum continued into July, reaching $56.2939 billion, and peaked in August at $57.2145 billion. The June increase was approximately $1.94 billion from May, July added about $1.22 billion, and August contributed roughly $920.6 million. Collectively, these three months added over $4 billion to Egypt’s foreign reserve stockpile.
Foreign currency inflows stay strong and support reserves
Remittances sent by Egyptians working abroad reached record levels during the 2025/2026 fiscal year, with the Central Bank of Egypt reporting inflows of about $47.3 billion for that period. This reflects a 29.6% rise from around $36.5 billion in the previous fiscal year. In June alone, remittances hit approximately $4.2 billion, a 15.6% increase from about $3.6 billion in June 2025, based on official figures released in August.
Egypt’s latest available balance of payments data covers the period from July to March of the 2025/2026 fiscal year. During this nine-month span, the overall balance recorded a deficit of $1.8 billion, while the capital and financial account posted net inflows of $9.9 billion. The current account showed a deficit of $14.6 billion. These figures offer the most recent official overview of Egypt’s external financial position before the August reserves update.
Consistent monthly records highlight steady reserve growth
Throughout 2026, Egypt’s reserves have set multiple new nominal records. January began with $52.5938 billion, followed by $52.7455 billion in February. March saw an increase to $52.8306 billion, April reached $53.0092 billion, and May closed at $53.1342 billion. By June, the reserves surpassed $55 billion, hitting $55.0723 billion in July, and finally reaching $57.2145 billion in August. The August figure remains provisional, consistent with the latest monthly reserve reports.
Compared to the reserve level of nearly $50.3 billion one year earlier, the August total is nearly $8 billion higher. The country has now recorded three consecutive month-end totals exceeding $55 billion. July was the first month to surpass $56 billion, and August marked the initial figure above $57 billion. Since December 2025, the reserve stock has grown by more than 10%. The August data solidifies Egypt’s record-high foreign reserves while continuing the uninterrupted monthly rise observed throughout 2026.
