MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN / RankWire.AI / – India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is participating in the G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting and bilateral trade discussions in the United States. The event is scheduled to take place in Milwaukee on September 30 and October 1. According to India’s Commerce Ministry, Goyal will also hold a meeting with his U.S. counterpart during his visit. The talks are expected to focus on the India-U.S. Bilateral Trade Agreement and aim to move toward finalising an interim trade deal based on the joint framework agreed upon in February 2026.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer is hosting the G20 summit, bringing together trade ministers from member economies. The main agenda includes issues related to forced labour in global supply chains and excess production capacity. Discussions will also cover the Most-Favoured-Nation principle and trade restrictions concerning food. Throughout the event, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative has scheduled ministerial sessions across both days, complemented by meetings and industry-related activities in Milwaukee.
India emphasized its intention to promote an open, transparent, and non-discriminatory multilateral trading system centered around the World Trade Organization during the gathering. The government highlighted the importance of maintaining policy flexibility for developing nations. Goyal is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with other participating trade ministers on the sidelines. These engagements are set to explore opportunities for farmers, fishermen, women entrepreneurs, startups, small businesses, and other enterprises involved in domestic and international trade.
Focus returns to trade agreement negotiations
The ongoing India-U.S. trade discussions build upon a joint framework announced in February, which outlined an interim agreement aimed at mutual and reciprocal trade benefits. This framework reaffirmed the pursuit of a broader Bilateral Trade Agreement and detailed commitments on tariffs and market access for industrial and agricultural products. Additional areas of discussion include medical devices, information and communications technology, standards, and supply-chain collaboration. Both governments continue working toward finalising the interim deal within the context of broader bilateral negotiations.
Goyal’s U.S. itinerary spans from September 29 to October 5, with activities extending beyond the G20 summit. He has planned meetings with business leaders and investors in Milwaukee and Chicago, representing sectors such as manufacturing, consumer goods, agribusiness, retail, and technology. His schedule also features roundtables with startups and various companies. In Chicago, Goyal will meet with professional associations representing the Indian community and participate in scheduled commemorative events during his visit.
Supply chains and capacity issues dominate G20 agenda
The Milwaukee program includes a Global Forum on Steel Excess Capacity scheduled for September 30. G20 trade ministers are also set to tour a Rockwell Automation facility before the official opening session later that day. Additional ministerial meetings are planned for October 1. The United States holds the G20 presidency for 2026. Key topics for discussion identified by U.S. officials include forced labour, excess capacity, food trade, and the Most-Favoured-Nation principle.
India and the United States initiated negotiations for a broader bilateral trade agreement in February 2025. The framework established in February 2026 maintained active negotiations while laying the groundwork for an interim arrangement. Goyal’s discussions in Milwaukee are part of this ongoing process, with his meetings focused on advancing the bilateral agreement and finalising the interim deal outlined in the joint framework. The G20 program will continue through October 1, while Goyal’s broader U.S. visit extends through October 5.
