KINSHASA, Democratic Republic of the Congo / RankWire.AI / – Health authorities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo have initiated a targeted Ebola vaccination effort in Kisangani, the administrative center of Tshopo Province, aiming to halt the country’s deadliest documented Ebola outbreak. Frontline healthcare workers, emergency response teams, and individuals with direct contact to confirmed cases are being prioritized during the initial phase of vaccination deployment. Health Minister Roger Kamba confirmed that the government has launched the immunization campaign using doses of the Ervebo vaccine to protect frontline personnel across affected eastern provinces.

Health authorities report DR Congo launches Ebola vaccination campaign using Ervebo doses across six eastern provinces.

Official epidemiological data shows that the ongoing outbreak has spread to six eastern provinces, including Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Tshopo, Haut-Uele, and Bas-Uele. Statistics from the Ministry of Public Health and Prevention reveal that the country has reported 5,713 confirmed cases and 2,744 fatalities. The current case fatality rate among confirmed infections is approximately 48%.

The escalating health crisis has prompted international agencies, including the World Health Organization, to assist local medical teams through logistics, laboratory testing, and vaccine distribution efforts. Authorities are administering the Ervebo vaccine under a compassionate-use framework while observational data on its effectiveness against the circulating viral strain are being collected by medical researchers. DR Congo’s vaccination initiative follows a ring-vaccination approach around identified infection clusters to help interrupt transmission chains.

Operational hurdles, including regional infrastructure challenges, security issues, and high mobility of populations across border districts, complicate logistical efforts. To address vaccine storage requirements, cold-chain systems have been set up in Kisangani to ensure ultra-low temperatures are maintained before distributing vaccines to remote health zones. The campaign is being carried out concurrently with educational outreach by civil defense and community health workers to improve disease surveillance and reporting, supported by Ebola efforts.

Epidemiologists from the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention are working closely with local teams to monitor adverse events and assess immune responses among vaccinated populations. Officials stress that early detection, combined with isolation and supportive care, remains crucial for improving patient outcomes. Additional vaccine supplies are planned for delivery as distribution extends to secondary health districts across the region.

Kisangani Acts as Central Hub for Regional Ebola Vaccine Distribution

National teams are intensifying contact tracing efforts throughout urban centers and rural zones within the eastern territories. Healthcare centers in municipalities are being supplied with personal protective equipment, diagnostic reagents, and therapeutic materials to bolster readiness. The government affirms that comprehensive public health measures will stay in place until infection rates show a consistent decline across all affected provinces.

Officials have called on local communities to fully cooperate with mobile vaccination teams and follow established health guidelines. It is expected that increased immunization among high-risk groups will help stabilize infection levels in the coming weeks. Surveillance systems will continue to be vigilant at transportation hubs and border crossings to prevent further geographic spread.
